A Qualitative Inquiry on the Experiences and Perceptions of Educators for restricted repetitive behaviors and interests in Autism Spectrum Disorder

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the Experiences and Perceptions of special educators for restricted repetitive behaviors and interests in Autism Spectrum Disorder. A total of seven special educators participated and were interviewed individually. They were asked to tell about their experiences and perceptions about the restricted restrictive behavior, stereotyped pattern of behavior, interests and activities of students with autism spectrum disorders. The scripts of interview were analyzed and the five themes and 13 subthemes were emerged. The themes emerged were 1) patterns of repetitive restricted behaviors and interest 2) the reason and the function of restricted behaviors and interest 3) the reaction of parents, teachers and peers 4) the effects of restricted repetitive behaviors and interest toward social relationship 5) personal efforts and achievements from the teachers according to restricted repetitive behaviors and interest. Also, thirteen subordinate subjects are made beneath these five main subjects. Finally, several specific educational implications for the repetitive restrictive behaviors and interests were provided.
